Another slightly uneventful passage from Fernandina Beach to St. Augustine (~50NM), except that there was a rough combination of light tailwind and residual seas at the beginning of our trip…which is my seasickness’s absolutely favorite duo.

Beaufort, SC > Fernandina Beach, FL
We loved Beaufort! Especially loved the Spanish moss on the trees…until I found out that snakes like to hang out in Spanish moss.. We motored to Fernandina Beach using the Hydrovane self-steering system for the first time! We did have to resort to hand-steering when the wind shifted to a […]
Charleston, SC > Beaufort, SC
We did a really awful job of documenting our short trip from Charleston, SC to Beaufort, SC. The trip took one long day of motorsailing. Charleston inlet is like a long, calm highway…and that’s about all we have in the cruising log. Oops! Here are some photos of our time […]
Beaufort, NC > Charleston, SC
We depart Beaufort, NC shortly before noon on Christmas Eve. We had hemmed and hawed about our plans and where to spend the holidays, and decide to head on to our next state. It’s rainy and foggy as we motor down the AICW. There is very little wind which makes […]
Norfolk, VA > Beaufort, NC
Here we are, on the Atlantic IntraCoastal Waterway (AICW, a/k/a “The Ditch”)!!!!!! This is a moment that we have been anticipating for a long time. The AICW is a series of protected waterways just inside of the Atlantic that runs from Norfolk, VA to Key West, FL. We have a […]
Annapolis, MD > Norfolk, VA
We spend a little over two weeks in Annapolis, for reasons both planned (had to leave the boat on a mooring for a bit while we traveled to Boston for work commitments) and unplanned (unforeseen scheduling issues with mainsail maintenance). But it is a good two weeks: we make a […]
Atlantic Highlands, NJ > Annapolis, MD
We have a couple of weather-related false starts before we depart Atlantic Highlands. Originally we were going to leave Wednesday, but the winds were forecast to be pretty strong and we knew that once we left Atlantic Highlands, we wouldn’t have many options for protected places to stop before Cape […]
City Island, NYC > Atlantic Highlands, NJ
City Island is a funny little speck of land at the mouth of the East River in the Bronx that once rivaled Manhattan as New York’s seaport metropolis. It is said to be the birthplace of oyster culture in the US, and was also home to a prominent shipbuilding community […]
New London, CT > City Island, NYC (via Port Jeff)
We grab a New London town mooring for several days. Brendan has to be in New York City for work Monday through Thursday so we need a solid spot to leave the boat while we’re away for several days. (Also, we haven’t bathed in over a week, and the town […]
Cuttyhunk, MA > New London, CT (via Mystic)
We seem to be two of about only five other people on the whole island of Cuttyhunk. (Wikipedia tells us that the year-round population is actually close to 50, but we’ve encountered no more than three of those residents.) A couple other boats come and go briefly over the four […]
