Boston, MA > Onset, MA

We spend the work week (10/23) in East Boston, with a nearby sunken sailboat eerily watching over us, the American flag atop its mast waving at low tide. While it feels strange sleeping on the other side of the harbor for a change, the splendid view of Boston it provides serves as a nice, nostalgic backdrop as we bid some final “see you later”s to family, colleagues, and friends. We were planning to continue on to Newport this weekend, but the weather has other plans for us, which includes a forecast of 70+ kt winds. So, instead, we leave Boston at 5:30am on Saturday morning with a much shorter itinerary in mind, heading to Onset, MA (a town just past the Cape Cod Canal).

Joining us this time was our good friend and most excellent crew member, Brian, and his lovely dog, Penny (first dog on the boat!). We motor out of Boston Harbor, bundled up, and eagerly await sunrise. Aside from the fantastic company and losing a halyard up the mast (booo!), the trip is fairly uneventful. We sail for a short while and then motor once the wind officially dies after two hours. We eat a princely lunch of Bagel Bites™, hot dogs, and mimosas. We see no animals (except Penny). I [Carrie] dock the boat for the first time at a fuel dock on the Sandwich side of the Cape Cod Canal. (Reluctantly? Feel pretty timid crossing the canal, against the current, with [zero] oncoming traffic…)

We will probably spend the rest of the weekend and early part of next week at Onset Bay Marina, where we have decided to play it safe and grab a slip to wait out the inclement weather…
